What is the future of the MVNO? Try the MVNE
Recent MVNO market news has been dominated by the demise of Amp’d Mobile and Mobile ESPN. Yet over the same period, mobile virtual network enablers (MVNEs) Visage Mobile and Ztar Mobile managed to raise some VC funding — another $10m for Visage, $4m for Ztar. The reason for this apparent dichotomy lies in what we would call the gold rush theory. During a gold rush, some miners will find gold, others will fall short, but all will need picks, axes, and shovels. In the MVNO space, those tools are sold by the likes of Visage, Ztar, and Versent Mobile. Read the full article

Sprint and Clearwire: a Dash for an Unclear WiMAX Future
Nearly a year after Sprint Nextel helped propel WiMAX to center stage with its announcement of a major mobile WiMAX initiative in the US, the operator repeated the feat. On July 19, 2007, the MNO announced that it is partnering with Clearwire to accelerate the deployment of mobile WiMAX in the US; the two will potentially increase coverage nationwide to 300m people. New Mobile Players in Panama Will Bring More Competition and Lower Prices
In Panama, regulator Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP) will auction two mobile licenses on October 25, 2007: Bands A and B in the 1850-1865 MHz and 1870-1885 MHz frequency ranges for upload and 1930-1945 MHz and 1950-1965 MHz frequencies for download. The objective is to promote competition in the mobile market, which is currently split evenly between Cable & Wireless (C&W) and Telefónica, the actual owner of these bands. Read the full article
