IPTV Players to Use VoD to Offer Internet-like TV
By Ozgur Aytar, Research Manager

IPTV operators are in a strong position to drive the evolution of VoD business models. In many markets, they are first movers with video-on-demand (VoD) services and get to determine how to position, package, and price these services. As the latest entrants to the pay-TV market, IPTV operators are pursuing the VoD opportunity aggressively and are increasingly banking on VoD to enhance the TV experience.
IPTV operators have already made some aggressive moves to build unique, rich VoD platforms—from France Telecom co-producing movies and Telefónica’s VoD offerings built around exclusive soccer content to the creation of multiplatform on-demand services. IPTV players enjoy a competitive advantage due to their network capabilities; not only can they extend their service more rapidly and widely than their cable and satellite DTH competitors, but they can also deliver a much larger amount of VoD content over IP. The Holy Grail for IPTV operators is to transform TV viewing into a more Internet-like experience, wherein programming flows through the VoD platform, giving consumers ultimate control over their content consumption. Certainly, business issues related to content copyright and licensing as well as a new advertising model will have to be worked out before operators can make this happen.

Clearwire: Triple Play and Increased Coverage May Lead to Lower Prices
In mid-June, Clearwire announced agreements with satellite TV carriers DirecTV and EchoStar. In doing so, it improved its competitive position, particularly against the large telcos and cable companies offering bundled services including fixed voice, TV, Internet, and wireless. During the same week, Sprint Nextel indicated it may seek alternative funding options for its WiMAX business, which may include a new partnership or a spinoff to a company such as Clearwire. Pyramid Prediction: We believe such an agreement combined with Clearwire’s new ability to provide triple play would increase the viability of the company and—once Clearwire upgrades from Expedience to mobile WiMAX—drive WiMAX adoption. However, increased coverage would lead to even greater competition, which may require a reduction in prices.

Beyond the 10m Mobile Subscribers: What’s Next for Telefonica in Mexico?
A few weeks ago, Spanish operator Telefonica announced it had reached 10m mobile customers in Mexico and signed a huge sponsorship contract with the Mexican Football Federation. Days later it came out with outstanding quarterly fi nancial results. 1Q2007 performance was the best ever for Telefonica Moviles Mexico (TEMM) and also one of the highest growth periods, after Peru, among Telefonica’s subsidiaries in Latin America. Although Telcel (the Mexican brand of America Movil) by far has the strongest position, the battle between America Movil and the Spanish fi rm in Mexico is one of the most important in the continental race for the mobile market. Read more

Pyramid Prediction: Given that both firms are preparing 3G deployments to be launched at the end of this year in Mexico; and because of the introduction of number portability and other potential modifi cations in the Mexican regulatory framework, we see 2008 as a critical time to defi ne the coming plans for Telefonica in America Movil’s home country. However, even with changes in the regulatory context and with aggressive market strategies, we don’t expect dramatic changes in the mobile market structure in the coming years, nor do we predict any real threats to the market leadership of America Movil.

3U TELECOM to sell LambdaNet
3U TELECOM AG has announced its intention to sell LambdaNet Communications Deutschland within the framework of its repositioning as a management and shareholding company. Following the takeover of LambdaNet in April 2004 and its successful development into one of the leading providers of transfer network solutions for telecommunications companies, Internet service providers (ISPs) and business customers, the company is now being sold for strategic reasons. In view of 3U's focus on the call-by-call and wholesale business since mid-2006 in the fixed-line telephony segment, LambdaNet, despite its ongoing excellent business development, is no longer necessary for the operations of the 3U Group. The sale is intended to provide 3U TELECOM with further liquidity for the development of the shareholding business in addition to its current available liquid funds of approximately €37 million.
