New Mobile Data Adoption Study

Four of the most populous countries in the world hold the greatest potential for the sale of infrastructure and terminal equipment, as well as mobile data content.  Of the roughly 1.05 billion new subscribers that will be added to worldwide mobile networks over the next four years, Pyramid Research estimates that 42% of them will come from the Brazil, Russia, India and China.  The Mobile Data Adoption Study helps to quantify the market opportunity by assessing current consumer adoption levels and usage patterns for mobile data.

Consisting of over 2500 interviews with wireless subscribers across the these regions and the U.K., the study gauges current mobile data usage habits, content preferences and propensity to adopt new services.  The U.K. data set serves as a benchmark for comparisons against that of a more mature market.

Survey Topics

  • Demographics: age, gender, income, education level
  • Product Ownership: device type & expenditure, purchasing channel, service plan and expenditure, technology usage (TV, DVD, camcorder, MP3, etc.)
  • Psychographics/Technology Habits: attitudes about technology, content preferences, internet/TV/music habits
  • Wireless Data Usage/Habits & Spending: wireless internet & email, alert services, SMS, IM, picture/video messaging, ring tones, games, directions, etc.

Survey Methodology

  • Over 2500 total responses from mobile subscribers, aged 18 and older
  • Equal respondent distribution across Brazil, Russia, India, China and U.K.
  • On-line interviews with wireless subscribers in Brazil, Russia, U.K.
  • Face-to-face interviews with wireless subscribers in China and India
    • China interview locations: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou
    • India interview locations: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkatta
  • 35 questions including demographics and end-user psychographics
  • Same localized survey instrument used in each country

Study results and analysis are available on a per country basis or for the entire BRIC region.   Country level deliverables include:
