Global Mobile Infrastructure Spending to Top $39bn in 2004
Infrastructure Market to level and begin decline following a strong 20
05

Cambridge, MA, October 26, 2004 – Pyramid Research’s “Global Mobile CAPEX Trend Letter” predicts a 12% increase in mobile infrastructure spending in 2004 over last year.  The recent wave of vendor profitability is fueled by traction of next generation network deployments, capacity needs resulting from increasing mobile subscribers and significant levels of GSM replacements.  Pyramid Research expects a $39bn market in 2004.

Pyramid Research senior analyst Ozgur Aytar comments that “next generation networks are taking charge in Western Europe and North America.  WCDMA spending in Western Europe will remain strong in 2004 and peak in 2005 at $4.9bn as operators meet license requirements and provide coverage in metropolitan areas.”  CDMA 1xEVDO deployments from Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless in North America represent more than a $1.5bn opportunity for vendors in 2004 and 2005.

The replacement market is becoming increasingly profitable for infrastructure vendors as Pyramid Research expects that 68% of YE2009 mobile subscribers worldwide will still use GSM technology, forcing carriers to continually invest in GSM network components.  Western Europe is the most significant replacement market and Aytar states that “40% of Western European GSM BTS shipments in 2004 will be replacements.”

Pyramid Research’s mobile CAPEX forecasts predict a decline following a strong market in 2005.  Current projections place the YE2009 infrastructure opportunity at $25bn.  Factors contributing to the decline are decreasing levels of net subscriber additions, declining prices for network equipment, and declining base station shipments.
