Cambridge, MA  - May 26, 2010 - Heavy Reading (www.heavyreading.com) and Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com) have joined forces to launch a new suite of custom research and consulting services for global operators and their vendors planning 4G wireless networks and mobile broadband services.  These research units of the Light Reading Communications Network have teamed with Wireless 20/20, LLC (www.wireless2020.com), a specialty consulting group supporting the wireless and mobile broadband industry, to develop these 4G business planning and consulting services designed to help 4G network operators address the challenge of developing a bankable business case essential to raising equity, debt and vendor financing.

The combination of Wireless 20/20’s WiROI™ Business Case Tools and Heavy Reading’s extensive  research and consulting on radio access networks, packet core, service platforms and mobile backhaul will help operators develop their 4G network architecture, technology roadmaps and deployment plans in multiple spectrum bands.   Wireless 20/20 developed the WiROI™ business planning tool to produces a detailed 10-year income statement, financial output graphs and key financial metrics.  The WiROI™ Tool also includes an easy-to-use, interactive, dashboard-style Graphical User Interface (GUI) to enable the user to perform sensitivity analyses in real-time and view the results instantly in an animated format.   Wireless 20/20 has already used the WiROI™ Tool to complete more than 40 wireless and mobile broadband operator business cases.

Heavy Reading and Wireless 20/20 recently used the WiROI™ Tool to complete an extensive 4G network and business planning engagement for an operator with three broadband wireless operations in the CIS/Eastern Europe.   This consulting engagement included a business case assessment and technology roadmap from mobile WiMAX 802.16e to TD-LTE in 2.3 GHz spectrum.  The study concluded that the value of the “technology neutral” BWA license and 55 MHz of 2.3 GHz spectrum could be significantly greater if a TD-LTE network was deployed as a as compared to a WiMAX network.  However, an advanced mobile WiMAX network must be deployed to capture market share and fulfill current BWA license obligations, since the ecosystem needed to support a commercial TD-LTE network would not be available until 2012.

The 4G Business Planning practice, led by Heavy Reading Senior Consultant Berge Ayvazian, is currently using WiROI™ to help operators compare alternative technology deployments options and analyze multiple vendor strategies “side-by-side", such as:

• use of HSPA+ as a key interim step towards LTE;
• evolution from EV-DO Rev. A to LTE or WiMAX;
• roadmap from Mobile WiMAX 802.16e Release 1.0 and 1.5 to 2.0 or 802.16m;
• 3GPP harmonization of LTE-FD and TD-LTE under IMT-Advanced; and
• assessment of vendor commitments to “LTE Ready” Mobile WiMAX networks.

“Operators planning to deploy 4G networks are facing a myriad of technical, strategic and business complexities in how to manage their network evolution and critical questions on how to get a return on their investments.” said Dennis Mendyk, Light Reading Vice President and Managing Director. “Leveraging Heavy Reading, Pyramid Research and the Wireless 20/20 WiROI™ Tool , operators can base their 4G mobile broadband business plans on driving Internet service adoption and stimulating revenue growth in more than 100 emerging telecom markets in Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe/CIS, Middle East and Africa.”

“Working with leading telecom research providers such as Pyramid Research and Heavy Reading extends the benefits of our financial modeling, strategic planning and business case development processes to a wider set of global operators” said Haig Sarkissian, Principal Consultant at Wireless 20/20.  “Together, our team is ideally positioned to support the needs of new licensees and operators in emerging markets like India or Indonesia which are conducting broadband wireless spectrum auctions in 2010“, added 4G practice leader Berge Ayvazian.  A demonstration version of the WiROI™Business Case Tool can be test driven at the Wireless 20/20 website (www.wireless2020.com/4gconsulting/) To inquire about this press release or this new offering, please email jbaker@pyr.com.
