Cambridge, Massachusetts- January 26, 2012- Whether she is a woman at the base of the pyramid or a woman with the means to regular mobile access, mobile phones are already demonstrating their potential impact in places around the globe, as demonstrated in various case studies in Pyramid’s new report:   mWomen: A Win-Win Opportunity for Mobile Operators.

CASE STUDY: mEmployment in Palestine

When Sylvia, a psychologist, graduated from university in Palestine she learned after a year or more of searching that finding job opportunities was going to be more difficult than she had anticipated. Due to a lack of experience and the travel limitations that women in Palestine contend with, Slyvia remained unemployed until she learned of the benefits that Souktel can bring for women just like her.

Souktel was founded as a way to utilize mobile phones to access classified ads where women could perform job searches. The service is entirely text message-based, and users can peruse available jobs in addition to the ability to post their own résumés. Souktel reported in December 2010 that globally about 750 women have benefited from their services by gaining employment. Slyvia is still stunned that for just $0.25 she was able to find a good job from a text message: “To the rest of Palestine’s youth who are still unemployed, I say: ‘Stop texting your friends, and start texting Souktel! A job could be just one SMS away!’”

“Advantages of the development of mWomen can include increased productivity, heightened feelings of personal safety and even a reduction in maternal and infant mortality rates,” says Ronda Zelezny-Green, Associate Research Analyst at Pyramid Research.  “As the utility of ICTs and especially mobile phones becomes more apparent, governments and MNOs have increased opportunities to experience direct and indirect benefits like the female beneficiaries of mobile phone access have seen as this access widens.”

mWomen: A Win-Win Opportunity for Mobile Operators is part of Pyramid Research's Telecom Insider Report Series and is priced at $595. Download an excerpt or purchase the report here. For more information, contact Jarka Justova (for those in Africa/Middle East, Asia-Pacific, or Europe) or Lorena Marani (for those in Latin America or North America).
