Cambridge, Massachusetts- November 16, 2011- Mobile penetration in Costa Rica will expand at an impressive rate to 140 percent by 2016, up from 61 percent in 2010, thanks to a rapid uptake of prepaid services and aggressive development in data services, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

“Despite its relatively low penetration levels compared with its peers, Costa Rica’s mobile sector contributes the majority of revenue, and Pyramid Research expects its share to widen by 5 percentage points by 2016,” says Jose Magana, Senior Analyst at Pyramid. The migration of more subscribers to prepaid services (for voice and data) and the further uptake of mobile Internet and mobile broadband will give operators more flexibility toward pricing and help users substitute fixed services with mobile offerings.
A growing market offers interesting opportunities. “For operators, a growing mobile data market and advanced devices will increase demand for mobile connectivity. Vendors will have an expanding market of young users willing to migrate to smartphones and portable computers, and a large connected society will bring a pool of online consumers to serve,” he explains.
Costa Rica: Surging Market Gives Operators More Devices, Access and Content to Sell is part of Pyramid Research's Latin America Intelligence Report Series and is priced at $990.
