Cambridge, Massachusetts- February 2, 2012- As uses for the mobile phone continue to be invented, women in emerging markets with access to the technology can make strides toward having previously unfulfilled needs met, as demonstrated in various case studies in Pyramid's new report: mWomen: A Win-Win Opportunity for Mobile Operators.

CASE STUDY: mEducation and mEntrepreneurship in India
Operating in the rural Indian state of Tamil Nadu, mobile network operator Uninor partnered with the non-governmental organization (NGO) Hand in Hand to establish ICT skills training centers for poor women in the area. Thus far, more than 500 of these centers have been established with the goal of introducing interested women to female entrepreneurs who can help them build skills to use the mobile phone for income generation.
"Uninor benefits from being positioned as an operator that cares about the development of poor women who live in rural areas," says Ronda Zelezny-Green, Associate Research Analyst at Pyramid Research. This is likely an approach that helps establish brand loyalty and recognition for Uninor among this customer base, as well. "For the women contracted to provide the training, in one particular case a woman was able to quadruple her monthly income from $22 to $88 by helping other women gain these useful skills," she notes.
mWomen: A Win-Win Opportunity for Mobile Operators is part of Pyramid Research's Telecom Insider Report Series and is priced at $595. Download an excerpt or purchase the report here.
