The market generated an expected $4.66bn in 2010, representing a 1.5% increase from 2009 year-end figures. This almost stagnant growth was caused by conflicts between Orascom (owners of Djezzy) and the Algerian government. After blocking the sale of Djezzy to MTN last year, the Algerian government hit Orascom with $600m in back taxes and denied them access to import any equipment till all back taxes were paid. This strongly hindered the operations of Algeria’s largest provider. Mobile data generated an expected $801m in 2010 and is expected to see a strong 19.7% revenue CAGR between 2010 and 2015. These figures are optimistic and take into consideration the long overdue introduction of 3G technology in 2012.
ARPT has been dominated by government influence and has thus far been unable to operate as a third-party regulator. This has hindered the ability of ARPT to encourage competition and the development of technology. Despite this history, we foresee change in Algeria translating into a 26.1% revenue CAGR between 2010 and 2015 for broadband Internet.
