The Italian telecom market generated €34.6bn ($46.4bn) in service revenue in 2009 and, despite an expected 1.3% drop in overall revenue in 2010 to €34.2bn ($46.4bn), Pyramid Research maintains a positive outlook on the market opportunity presented. We expect the overall market to grow at a CAGR of 3.1% over the next five years, with Italy representing a cumulative service revenue opportunity of €255bn ($314bn) during the 2010-2015 period.
The fastest-growing segment of the market is mobile data, which we expect to expand from €5.7bn ($7.8bn) to €10.8bn ($15.9bn) over the forecast period. Broadband-enabled services (IPTV, VoIP and Internet access) will continue to defy the decline that we foresee across other segments in 2010. This is principally driven by the fiber plans of both alternative operators (Wind, Fastweb and Vodafone) and Telecom Italia, with both groups having presented plans for a NGN rollout to the Ministry of Economic Development in June 2010. Under both proposals, which may eventually result in a shared network agreement, up to 50% of the Italian population would benefit from next-generation connectivity by 2018.
