The Dutch telecom market generated $15.3bn in service revenue in 2008. The CAGR between 2009 and 2014 is forecast to be -0.02%. The mobile voice, data and broadband sectors are the largest segments, and all show growth throughout the forecast period except mobile voice. Circuit-switched voice is being replaced by VoIP both through cable and DSL networks. IPTV is the highest growth segment but is expected to remain small, generating $176m in 2014. KPN plans to dismantle the circuit-switched network altogether in 2011 and will implement emulation technologies on IP rather than continue supporting niche circuit-switched laggard markets thereafter.
Broadband is a key access technology, and although consolidation has decreased the number of players, the focus on next-generation technology, fiber and DOCSIS 3.0 will be key to longer term success. Mobile network operators Vodafone and T-Mobile both have a marginal presence, with Tele2/Versatel being the only real option to gain scale in the broadband segment.
