The Slovak telecom market generated $2.0bn in service revenue in 2013, a 1.4% decline from the previous year in dollar terms, while remaining more or less stable in local currency. The market has been affected by a number of price caps introduced by the regulator over the past few years. Looking forward, we project total market revenue will grow at a 1.4% CAGR in dollar terms between 2013 and 2018, with data services being the most important driver. In 2013, mobile operators generated approximately 70% of total revenue, a figure that will remain more or less unchanged over the forecast period.
Total mobile subscriptions will grow at a 2.3% CAGR through 2018, reaching 7.4m, for a penetration rate of 138.6%. The growth will come from a combination of multi-SIM usage, increased use of mobile broadband as well as M2M uptake. In Slovakias highly competitive mobile market, MNP continues to play a crucial role, with all MNOs focusing their marketing strategies on it. In addition, MNOs are currently focused on data adoption, which is being stimulated by their LTE technology rollouts following the December 2013 auction.
Showing clear signs of being a mature market for voice services, Slovakia presents many opportunities in the data segment, which we project will contribute more than half of all telecom revenue generated in the country during 2013-2018. Upgrades of fixed networks to next-generation networks and the recently concluded LTE auction will be the main drivers of data growth.
