The 2009 global economic recession had a devastating effect on Spanish telecom demand. Total market revenue declined by 6% compared with its 2008 level, reaching €28.6bn ($39.8bn) in 2009. The largest Spanish operators, Telefónica, Vodafone and Orange, cut their capex by 15.6%, 12% and 22.6%, respectively, which resulted in the operators’ sluggish investments in new access technologies and in network upgrades and coverage expansion.
As Spain recovers from the economic recession in 2010/2011, its communications market will also recover. We project that total market revenue will grow at a CAGR of 2.7% in the 2009-2014 period, representing a cumulative revenue opportunity of €181bn ($257bn) in the same period. The mobile data market will be particularly attractive both in terms of the volume of the revenue it will generate and revenue growth. The main drivers behind this wireless data explosion will be the uptake of data cards, as well as M2M services, which will see a multifold expansion in usage particularly in the area of automotive telemetry. In the fixed access market, broadband-based services (Internet access, VoIP and IPTV) will see a noteworthy expansion as operators begin investing more in new access technologies, such as fiber optics, which will provide higher Internet speeds as well as increased quality of service and diversification of service offerings.
