The Vietnamese telecom market has witnessed stunning growth in recent years, with its revenue more than doubling from $3.2bn in 2007 to the $7.3bn we expect for 2011. The mobile segment accounts for the majority of this growth, as it brought telecom services to a large percentage of previously underserved Vietnamese. Going forward we expect mobile to remain dominant, growing at a 5.0% CAGR from 2011 to 2016 and accounting for 70.7% of the $2.3bn of additional revenue the total market will generate in the period. The main growth engine will be mobile data, expected to advance at a 9.7% CAGR propelled by growing 3G adoption. Mobile operators are pursuing a very aggressive 3G access pricing policy, which will entice more customers to use these services via both PCs and handsets. Mobile voice services will grow at a slower 2.4% CAGR, due mainly to the price war currently ruling the segment. Pay-TV and fixed-line segments will also grow robustly through 2016 at 16.4% and 7.9% CAGRs, respectively. Pay-TV services will benefit from low household penetration and improving economic conditions to rapidly expand its footprint in Vietnam. Fixed-line services will grow on the account of broadband expansion, with PSTN voice connections being expected to decrease during the period.
