The time is right for personal communications, IPTV, streaming media and NGN advocates within a service provider organization to cross organizational boundaries and have an open discussion about their respective plans and infrastructure expectations. They have much to gain from one another in using the NGN to deliver a “managed cloud” that addresses their mutual concerns. The “any to any over any” capabilities touted by the telecom industry for so long have become table stakes for service providers. NGNs provide one more tool for smaller service providers to answer the age-old question as to whether or not to remain in the lower layers of the network value chain and be a so-called dumb pipe. Some service providers will opt to provide pipes, while other service providers will partner with NGN infrastructure providers for advanced functionality rather than undertaking the buildout themselves.

How NGNs Enable Advanced Telco Services: The Path to the Managed Cloud addresses both the technical and the business value aspects of NGN. The report provides an overview of the NGN market context and drivers. In the next section, Pyramid looks into the technologies and their readinexx, including the IMS architecture. Mobile IP access and communications, application signaling, IPTV, and service deliver platforms are also examined in this section. In Section 3, Pyramid examines NGN services, devices, pricing models and best practices. Case studies of NGN deployments are presented next, followed by analysis of NGN performance and business opportunities for operators.

Key findings include:

  • The ongoing evolution of advanced telco services is driven by changes in how consumers want to access communications and content services, and these changes in behavior are no longer limited to the Millennials.
  • A facilities-based approach using NGN principles is the winning formula for the long term, because the network intelligence inherent in NGN can accommodate a blend of managed services, OTT content and ecosystem-based delivery over any access, with guaranteed quality of service.
  • Over the next several years, as the standards for NGN and IMS are finalized and begin to find their way into products, and as Rich Communications Suite and unified communications capabilities are fully realized, consumer-facing converged features and business-to-business service models will become more and more compelling.
