China Unicom Ltd, the flagship subsidiary of China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom Group), was incorporated in 2000 in Hong Kong. The parent company, China Unicom Group, was formed in July 1994 and arose from rivalry between the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT), which operated China Telecom, the Ministry of Electronic Industries (MEI), and the Railways and Electric Power Industries. The rail and electric power industries wanted to decrease their dependency on the MPT so they developed their own private communications networks. This rivalry, coupled with the initiative of the three ministries - the MEI, the Ministry of Railways, and the Ministry of Electric Power Industries - and the low telephone density in China, led to reforms and the creation of China Unicom. China Unicom Group is predominantly owned by the Chinese government.
The principal activities of China Unicom Ltd and its subsidiaries are the provision of GSM and CDMA cellular, data, Internet, and long-distance services in the People's Republic of China.
The immediate holding company of China Unicom Ltd is China Unicom (BVI) Ltd which owned 77.33% of the company as of January 2006. The remaining shares of China Unicom Ltd were owned by overseas public shareholders.
The majority of the equity interests in China Unicom (BVI) Ltd is owned by China United Telecommunications Corporation Ltd, which in turn is majority owned by China United Telecommunications Corporation, a state-owned enterprise.
(See Corporate Structure section of this profile for a detailed overview of the structure of the China Unicom Group.)
