France Telecom has been operating as a corporation since 1996 under the French Telecommunications Ministry. The company expanded its international presence through acquisitions, and also forayed into new service areas.
France Telecom is the state-controlled incumbent fixed-line and mobile communications operator of the French Republic. The company also owns and operates a global family of fixed-line telephony, mobile communications, Internet service provider (ISP), and international data network services businesses. Overall, France Telecom’s presence extends from Europe to the Asia-Pacific covering approximately 220 countries and regions.
In order to more effectively reflect its organisation and the evolution of its activities on the different markets, France Telecom began operating in four new segments as of January 2005, namely the Personal segment, grouping all the activities for mobile services in France, the UK, Poland, and Rest of the World; the Home segment, covering activities for fixed telecommunications services (fixed telephony, Internet services, and operator services), and revenues from distribution and support functions provided to other France Telecom group segments; the Enterprise segment, for business services in France and global services; and, the Directories segment, consolidating the activities of the PagesJaunes Group subsidiary.
France Telecom’s subsidiaries include: Orange SA, a leading cellular operator; Wanadoo, providing Internet access services, e-merchant solutions for enterprises and directories; Equant, offering data transmission services across the globe; and, TP Group (Telekomunikacja Polska SA (TPSA)), a Polish telecommunications operator. (Orange and TPSA are covered in detail in separate Executive Briefings as part of the Network Operators Worldwide (NOW) service.)
In September 2004, the government sold 9.6% of its stake in France Telecom in a share placement reserved for institutional investors. This was followed by the exercise of a greenshoe option for the sale of further shares, reducing the government’s stake in France Telecom to 42.25% and raising a total of €5,100 million.
In June 2005, the French government sold an additional 6.2% of its interest in France Telecom, raising €3.4 billion. After the sale, the state was left with a 34.9% stake in the telecommunications company. The state said it planned to cut its stake to between 32% and 35%.
