KT Corporation (known as Korea Telecom until March 2002) dominates the South Korean telecommunications market. It was established in December 1981 to act as the country's sole fixed-line local, domestic and international longdistance telecommunications operator, and established its own mobile telephone network in 1984 (which later became rival SK Telecom). Shares of KT were sold off between 1993 and 2002, culminating in the disposal of the final block of government-owned shares in the second quarter of 2002. This enabled K Telecom to acquire a significant stake in KT, which it later sold on due to criticisms aimed at the company that alleged a conflict of interest.
KT Corporation is Korea’s leading telecommunications company providing services to both residential and business users. The company offers fixed-line telephone services, business, and data communication services including broadband Internet access and leased-line, mobile services through its subsidiary KTF (formerly KT Freetel), and other telecommunications services comprising system and network integration, as well as satellite communications. The corporation also owns two satellites, all of the country’s domestic public exchanges, the complete network of local telephone lines, public long-distance telephone transmission facilities as well as the primary data communications network in the country.
KT Corporation operates under two reportable segments, wireline communications and PCS services.
In September 2004, Brandes Investment Partners was identified as KT’s largest foreign shareholder with 8.06% of the company’s total shares. However, this is 0.204% in excess of the foreign ownership limit and as a result Brandes Investment Partners has until March 2005 to reduce its ownership in KT to the maximum 7.856%.
As of January 2005, National Pension Corp was the largest domestic shareholder in KT Corp with a 3.74% stake.
