Originally incorporated as an operating company in June 1994, Portugal Telecom SA was reorganised until PT Investimentos and itself were merged in December 2000, creating Portugal Telecom SGPS SA (PT) as a group holding company.
As the country's incumbent operator, PT offers a range of services in Portugal, which include:
• wireline services, which include fixed-line telephone services for retail and wholesale customers, leased lines, interconnection, distribution of programming for TV and radio broadcasters, Internet access, data and business solutions, portal, and e-commerce services;
• mobile telecommunications services, such as voice, data, and Internet-related services;
• multimedia services, such as cable and satellite television services and TV programming, film distribution and
screening, newspaper publishing and distribution, radio programming, and cable Internet; and,
• the sale of telecommunications equipment.
In addition to Portugal, PT offers services through joint ventures and alliances in a number of international markets, including Brazil, Morocco, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Timor, Angola, Kenya, China, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
PT is listed on Lisbon's Euronext and the New York Stock Exchange. The company embarked upon a share buyback programme in September 2003. As of June 2004,Telefónica SA of Spain held around 8.37% of PT’s ordinary share capital.
