Royal KPN NV is the partially-privatised incumbent fixed-line and mobile communications operator of the Netherlands, although it also owns and operates mobile communications networks in Germany and Belgium and has interests in fixed-line and mobile operations in Hungary and the UK. It also offers data services in parts of Western Europe.
Since 1994, the Dutch government’s stake in the company has been diluted via the initial public offering (IPO) of shares, sale of shares to foreign institutions, and the sale and acquisition of various subsidiaries and affiliates. Ownership of the company has varied, although the government continues to hold a ‘special’ share in KPN, entitling it to veto fundamental changes in the organisation and strategic direction of the company. Currently, the state's ownership of KPN is 14.25% of the company's outstanding shares.
