Swisscom Mobile AG is a part of the Swisscom Group, which was a state monopoly until the end of 1997. The Swiss telecommunications market was opened up to competition and Swisscom became a stock corporation from January 1998 onwards. Later in January 2001, Swisscom Mobile was created as a result of a broad strategic share acquisition agreement between Swisscom AG and Vodafone Group of the UK. Under the agreement, Swisscom AG agreed to separate its mobile business (excluding SICAP and paging services) and to contribute the mobile business to a new holding company, Swisscom Mobile.
Swisscom Mobile, which operates GSM 900/1800 networks in Switzerland, also offers high-speed circuit switched data (HSCSD), general packet radio service (GPRS), enhanced data rates for GSM evolution (EDGE), multimedia messaging service (MMS), public wireless local area network (PW-LAN) services, and universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) services. The company became the first operator in Switzerland to operate a 3G UMTS network in July 2004.
The service segments across which Swisscom Mobile generates its revenues are connectivity voice, connectivity data and value-added services, and other services that include selling of mobile handsets and SICAP services. Besides these, the company also collects basic fees for its offerings. The major brand names of the company are NATEL and COMBOX.
A majority interest of 75% in Swisscom Mobile is held by Swisscom AG and the remaining 25% is held by Vodafone, which acquired this stake under the share acquisition agreement with Swisscom.
