These comprehensive reports on leading telecommunications operators worldwide cover all aspects of their operations, including quarterly-updated Executive Briefings on over 100 operators.

Telenor ASA was created in November 1994 as the successor to Televerket, the state-owned monopoly telecommunications operator in Norway, and was a joint-stock company with the Norwegian state as the sole shareholder until December 2000, when the company launched its initial public offering (IPO). In March 2004, the Norwegian government sold 170 million shares in Telenor, reducing its stake in the company to around 53%.

Telenor is the incumbent telecommunications operator in Norway and provides a full range of services, including fixedline, mobile, broadband, and cable TV services. The company also has substantial international operations, particularly in the areas of mobile telephony, satellite operations, and pay-TV services.

With respect to international mobile operations, the company had interests in mobile operations in 11 countries at the end of 2004, with principle investments in six operations: Sonofon Denmark); Pannon GSM (Hungary); DiGi.Com (Malaysia); Kyivstar (Ukraine); GrameenPhone (Bangladesh); and, ProMonte GSM (Montenegro). In addition, the company has participations in five other mobile operators in Europe and Southeast Asia, including Russia-based Vimpel
Communications (VimpelCom).

In the fixed-line market, Telenor is the leading provider of fixed network telecommunications services in Norway. The company also claims to be the leading provider of Internet access and services to the residential market in Norway. Telenor also has international operations in Sweden, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic and owns an interest in Russian telecommunications operator, Golden Telecom.

Telenor also provides broadcasting services to customers in the Nordic region. The company claims to be the leading provider of TV services in the Nordic countries through satellite dish, cable networks, and small antenna TV-network systems. Telenor operates the national terrestrial broadcast network in Norway and claims to be the leading provider of satellite broadcasting services in the Nordic region, utilising three geo-stationary satellites.

Telenor also conducts significant operations related to its core business areas through other businesses. EDB Business Partner, Telenor’s 51.8%-owned publicly-listed subsidiary, is an information technology company in Norway. Wholly-owned Satellite Services offers satellite-based communications networks and services to a variety of governmental, intergovernmental, and commercial organisations, and is a provider of global mobile communications services, directed at the maritime, land mobile, and aeronautical markets.
