TeliaSonera AB was created in December 2002 through the merger of the incumbent telecommunications operators in Sweden and Finland, Telia AB and Sonera Oy. The resulting entity is the leading telecommunications group in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
While TeliaSonera provides telecommunication services in the Baltic and Nordic countries, it also provides mobile services in Eurasia, Russia, and Turkey. The company operates under the Telia brand in Sweden and Denmark, under the Sonera brand in Finland, and under the NetCom brand in Norway. In the Baltic regions TeliaSonera operates through subsidiaries and associate companies. Additionally, the company’s International Carrier business provides international capacity, voice, and IP services across the Atlantic and Europe on a wholesale basis. The company’s customers are primarily classified under fixed and mobile communications.
At the end of December 2004, the Swedish State owned 45.3% of TeliaSonera's share capital, while the Finnish State owned 13.7%. The company was listed on the Stockholm Exchange, the Helsinki Exchange, and NASDAQ Stock Market in the US, with private investors and institutions, both inside and outside of Sweden and Finland, among its shareholders. However, in July 2004, TeliaSonera voluntarily ended the quotation of its American depositary shares on NASDAQ. TeliaSonera shares continue to trade on the Stockholm and the Helsinki Exchanges.
