Cisco Systems was founded in 1984 by two scientists from the Stanford University in California, US. Subsequently, in 1987, the company received its first funding worth US$2 million from Sequoia Capital, a venture capital firm. In 1990, the company went public and was listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.
Cisco Systems manufactures and sells networking and communications products and provide services associated with that equipment and its use. Its products are installed at corporations, public institutions, telecommunications companies, and commercial businesses and are also found in personal residences. The company provides a range of products for transporting data, voice and video within buildings across campuses, and around the world. Cisco Systems conducts its business globally and, up until July 31, 2005, was managed geographically in four segments: the Americas: Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA); Asia Pacific; and, Japan. However, as a result of its organisational changes beginning in fiscal 2006 (from August 1, 2005), the company's reportable segments were changed to the following 'theatres': US and Canada; European Markets; Emerging Markets; Asia Pacific; and, Japan. The organisational changes are designed to align the company's focus on long-term growth, capture emerging market opportunities, and serve its customers better.
The company's operations involve the design, development, manufacturing, marketing, and technical support of networking and communications products and services. Cisco products include routers, switches, advanced technologies, and other networking equipment. These products, primarily integrated by Cisco IOS Software, link geographically dispersed local-area networks (LANs) and wide-area-networks (WANs)
