UK-based Cable & Wireless plc (C&W) was established in the 1860s and grew to become one of the world's leading international communications companies. The first transatlantic cable was installed for the British colonies under the group name of Eastern Telegraph Company (ETC). Later, in 1929, the company merged with Marconi Company and from 1934 the combined organisation was called Cable & Wireless Ltd. Following a disastrous period for the company, C&W announced a major restructuring in November 2002. In June 2003, the company was re-organised with a geographical and customer focus and the global and regional distinction was eliminated.

C&W provides IP, voice, and data services to business customers, and to residential customers in some markets, as well as services to other telecommunications carriers, mobile operators, and providers of content, applications, and Internet services.

The company's principal operations are in the UK, continental Europe, Japan, the Caribbean, Panama, the Middle East, and Macau.

As of June 1, 2004, Legal & General Group plc held 4.47% of C&W’s ordinary shares while The Trustees of the BT Pension Scheme held another 3.33%.
