eircom Group plc, formerly known as Telecom Éireann, was established in 1984 when it became an independent state-owned
company. In July 1999, eircom was floated on the New York, London, and Dublin Stock Exchanges, becoming eircom plc. In May 2001, eircom's mobile subsidiary, eircell, was sold to Vodafone. In November 2001, eircom plc was acquired by Valentia Telecommunications Ltd and subsequently became the privately-owned eircom Ltd. eircom was re-listed on the Dublin and London Stock Exchanges in March 2004.

eircom is Ireland's leading communications company, providing a range of voice, data, and Internet services. It offers fixed-line voice and data services to homes and businesses including PSTN and ISDN access; local, national and international telephony services; public payphones; data transmission services; IP services; managed data networking services; and, hosting and Internet access services.

As the group operates on a unitary basis, the company has no reporting segments. However, eircom reports its revenues across its product categories such as access, voice and data, data communications, interconnect services, and other services.

As of May 2004, the major shareholders of the company were eircom ESOP Trustee Ltd and Goldman Sachs Securities, holding about 29.14% and 13.52% of the company’s ordinary shares, respectively.
