Elisa was founded in Helsinki in 1882 as Helsinki Telephone Corporation. On July 1, 2000, Helsinki Telephone Corporation merged with and into HPY Holding Corporation, and the company adopted the name Elisa Communications Corporation.

During 2001, Elisa acquired the entire share capital of its associated company, SOON Communications Plc, and at the same time, KSP Group Plc (now Yomi Plc) and Finnet International Ltd became Elisa subsidiaries. Elisa's mobile retail chains were transferred to form part of Radiolinja and in Germany, city carriers belonging to Elisa Kommunikation GmbH were integrated into the associated company Tropolys GmbH. On January 1, 2002 Tropolys GmbH became Elisa's subsidiary through Elisa Kommunikation GmbH.

In April 2003, Elisa Communications Corporation changed its name to Elisa Corporation. The same year, Riihimaen Puhelin Oy and Heltel became wholly-owned subsidiaries of Elisa.

In October 2003, Elisa announced a plan to merge all of its wholly-owned subsidiaries (including Oy Radiolinja Ab, ElisaCom Ltd, Riihimäen Puhelin Oy and its subsidiaries, plus Elisa Networks Ltd and Soon Net Ltd) with Elisa Corporation by July 2004.

At the beginning of 2004, Elisa sold its German operations to a consortium of minority shareholders.

During 2005, Elisa sold its IT subsidiary Yomi Software plc and the security business of Estera Oy as part of its strategy to divest operations that did not form part of its core business.

Elisa's major acquisitions during 2005 included: Tikka Communications, the Joensuu-based regional telephone company; Wivanet, a wireless broadband business; and, Saunalahti Group Oyj, a telecommunications and Internet services operator and a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) in Finland.

Today, Elisa is the largest of Finland's incumbent local/regional telephone companies, offering voice and data services, Internet access and content services, voice solutions, customised communication and ICT solutions, international communication solutions, and network operator services to enterprise and residential customers.

Elisa also has operations in Estonia.

The shares of Elisa Corporation have been listed on the Helsinki Exchange since 1997. As of January 31, 2006, the largest shareholder of Elisa Corporation was Novator Finland Oy with a 10.3% interest in the company.
