Kingston Communications (HULL) PLC evolved from the Hull City Telephone Department, an operator set up by the local authority in 1902. The name change was effected in 1987, when the operator became municipally owned.

In July 1998, UK telecommunications regulator, Oftel, announced that BT would be allowed to offer services in Hull and that Kingston would be able to extend its service area. Kingston Communications now offers telephony services to residential and business customers in Hull, East Yorkshire and to businesses throughout the UK.

As well as maintaining East Yorkshire's entire telecommunications infrastructure, Kingston Communications' national business-to-business operation, Affiniti, offers businesses throughout the UK a comprehensive communications portfolio: voice, data, Internet and mobile connectivity; contact centres; a range of managed services; and, a specialist directory-publishing unit.

In addition, Kingston Communications provides communications services to third parties - such as ISPs and Value-Added-Resellers - who use the company's network capabilities to provide services to their customers. The company also compiles, designs and produces specialist directories for businesses including other telecoms operators. Kingston Communications Group shares were floated on the Stock Exchange in July 1999. Kingston's main shareholder is Kingston upon Hull City Council, with a 30.6% stake (December 2005).
