Orange SA, the flagship holding company for the mobile communications assets of France Telecom, was originally created in 1994 and became part of France Telecom in 2000. Orange SA was earlier owned by Vodafone as Orange plc and was acquired by France Telecom for UK£25.1 billion in August 2000. The company was later floated on the London and Paris stock markets in February 2001. In late-2003, France Telecom began proceedings to buy-back the shares in Orange SA that it did not own and by April 2004, Orange was wholly-owned by France Telecom.

Presently, Orange SA provides a full continuum of mobile voice and data communications services to more than 56 million subscribers (as at June 30, 2005) across 16 countries - France, the UK, Switzerland, Romania, Slovakia, Thailand, Ivory Coast, Dominican Republic, Cameroon, the Netherlands, Botswana, Madagascar, Belgium, Egypt, Portugal, and Austria.

Orange's activities are mainly centred around voice transmission on digital networks using GSM technology, although most of the company's subsidiaries offer GPRS technology for data transmission. Orange has also deployed EDGE technology on certain of its European networks.

Orange's controlled subsidiaries hold 3G UMTS licences in France, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, and Switzerland. The company's minority-controlled subsidiaries have been awarded UMTS licences in Austria and Portugal.
