Orascom Telecom Holding SAE (OTH), which is part of the Orascom Group, was established in 1998 and has grown to become a major player in the global telecommunications market.
OTH is a mobile telecommunications company with GSM operations in seven emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. The company operates GSM networks in Algeria (Djezzy), Pakistan (Mobilink), Egypt (MobiNil), Tunisia (Tunisiana), Iraq (Iraqna), Bangladesh (Banglalink), and Zimbabwe (Telecel Zimbabwe). The company also provides telecommunications support services, including satellite and Internet, mainly supporting its own operations. In March 2005, OTH won a licence to build and operate a national fixed-line network in Algeria. In March 2005, in a further move to expand its non-GSM Telecom Services segment, the company formed two subsidiaries to build and operate undersea fibre-optic cables connecting Algeria and Pakistan with international telecommunications hubs.
At the end of 2004, the Sawiris family of Egypt owned the majority stake in OTH (56.5%), while the remaining 43.5% was free float. OTH shares are traded on the Cairo and Alexandria stock exchange and the London stock exchange.
