QUALCOMM Inc, which commenced operations in July 1985, initially providing contract research and development services and limited product manufacturing, is a leader in the field of code division multiple access (CDMA) technology and a major developer and supplier of CDMA-based voice and data communications products and services. In addition to gaining revenue from CDMA licensing and royalties, QUALCOMM is involved in developing and producing CDMA chipsets and system software, satellite-based systems, and what are described as “new innovations” in wireless data products and applications.
Since 1989, QUALCOMM has been involved in the development and commercialisation of its proprietary CDMA technology for digital wireless communications applications, including digital cellular, personal communications services (PCS), and wireless local loop (WLL) applications. CDMA was adopted as an industry standard (IS-95) in July 1993.
Following a series of patent agreements, most notably with Ericsson during 1999, QUALCOMM believes that it has paved the way for CDMA to become the worldwide mobile standard. Also during 1999, QUALCOMM made the decision to divest its low-margin phone manufacturing business, thereby placing increasing reliance on more lucrative CDMA licensing agreements, royalty and development fees, and contract agreements with domestic and international wireless communications equipment suppliers, service providers, and research organisations.
QUALCOMM’s chip-making division has developed six generations of CDMA chipsets and software systems. QUALCOMM has shipped more than 600 million chips to manufacturers around the world, including more than 200 million MSM for handsets. QUALCOMM’s Mobile Station Modem (MSM) product enables digital phone manufacturers to build sophisticated voice recognition capability into their phones and enables standby times of up to 200 hours.
QUALCOMM is also active in the area of high data rate (HDR) technology, an application that QUALCOMM believes will be as revolutionary to the wireless Internet as CDMA technology has been to wireless communications. The HDR system is optimised for packet data services, with a flexible architecture based on Internet protocol (IP). According to QUALCOMM, HDR has potential for both preceding and complementing third-generation (3G) wireless communications. QUALCOMM believes that it is in a “unique” position to enable growth and development in the voice and data arenas of
the wireless communications industry.
