ZTE Corporation was originally established as Zhongxing Semiconductor Co Ltd in February 1985. In March 1993, Zhongxing Telecommunications Equipment Co Ltd (ZTE) was incorporated. The company’s stocks were listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in November 1997. In December 2004, the company floated its shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, through which the company raised US$455 million.

The group is engaged in the design, development, production, distribution, and installation of a range of advanced telecommunications systems and equipment, including wireless communications systems, wireline switches, and access equipment, optical and data communications equipment, handsets, and telecommunications software systems and services.

ZTE has sold its products to over 150 customers in more than 60 countries and regions around the world including telecommunications service providers in India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Thailand, Russia, Romania, Nigeria, Egypt, and Hong Kong.

As of June 30, 2005, the Chinese Government (through Zhongxing) held a 44.11% stake in ZTE.
