MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS

Peru: Enter Millicom?

Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular (MIC) recently announced its intention to participate in the upcoming auction for the country’s fifth mobile license.  Senior Analyst Marc Einstein argues that although the right market conditions exist in the country, if MIC decides to enter the market it will face an uphill battle against three entrenched competitors.

US: Successfully Combating ARPS Dilution

The overwhelming success of the family plan brought droves of subscribers to US operators, helping to raise penetration nationwide. Now, US operators hope to replicate that success by increasing their focus on prepaid uptake (re-launching, re-branding, and repositioning their prepaid offerings). However, this renewed focus to increase penetration and uptake has resulted in a steady decline in voice ARPS over the past 6 to 12 months. Senior Analyst Taha Rangwala discusses some strategies US operators have adopted to battle ARPS dilution while continuing to add subscribers at a record pace.

Mexico: Iusacell Gears Up for TV

CDMA operator Iusacell recently announced its intention to become the first operator to offer mobile TV to Mexican subscribers.  Analyst Vanessa Larez examines the innovative offering which she believes will create significant opportunities for content providers in Latin America’s second-largest market.
