HTCC Needs a Mobile Arm or Partner to Compete with Magyar Telekom

Price: $125.00

Publication Date: June 2008

EVENT SPOTLIGHT

In 2007, Hungarian Telephone and Cable Corp (HTCC) acquired two telecom providers: Invitel, the second largest fixed-service provider, and Tele2 Hungary, the leading alternative operator in the market. Since its founding in 1993, HTCC had already acquired three other players: Hungarotel, PanTel and Euroweb. Its last two acquisitions narrowed the gap between HTCC and T-Com, the incumbent player, making HTCC the second largest operator in the fixed market. However, given T-Com’s dominant position in all segments, we believe that the lack of a mobile arm will limit HTCC’s growth and that its acquisition spree won’t lead to a fundamental reshaping of the telecom market in Hungary. More importantly, the market will provide further opportunities for acquisitions and partnerships in the next few years.
