Telefónica announced the evolution of its IoT Portal for SMEs that promises to accelerate the adoption of IoT solutions among SMEs

Telefónica announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016 the evolution of its IoT Portal aimed at the SME segment, based on its existing IoT Partner Programme (IPP) portal. The IoT Portal will provide access to an ecosystem of more than 700 IoT partners and bundled IoT connectivity solutions. It also offers information about news and events related to the IoT arena. Registered SMEs will be able to access online self-service management tools such as pricing center, ordering, cellular coverage maps, service changes and post-sales support.

Over the years, telcos have institutionalized massive human operational, marketing, and call-center capabilities to serve the SME segment. These channels have traditionally been focused on selling network connectivity services (i.e. mobility services), with limited exposure to other value-added services, such as IoT services.

Reaching out to the large number of SMEs represents one of the main obstacles for telcos. The competitive environment and limited return on investment do not justify dedicating operational, marketing and call-center capabilities to selling IoT services.

Pyramid Research believes that the implementation of these public portals like IoT marketplaces can help telcos mitigate channel disruption by sending customers to the online marketplace for service on-boarding and provisioning.  These public portals will allow telcos to continue their digital transformation by optimizing the process of developing, integrating, marketing, selling, supporting, and bundling IoT and connectivity services.
