After the Chinese market showed a strong year-on-year growth of 10.5% in 2010, an even better performance was recorded in 2011 as revenue improvement increased to 13.2%. We expect the trend to continue in 2012 as the projected $165.8bn in revenue for the year will illustrate another year of robust growth at 13.8%. The main driver supporting the positive outcome is mobile data, which we estimate to generate $46.0bn in 2012, bettering the $36.4bn in 2011 by 26.4%. Growing at a CAGR of 18.4% from 2012 to 2017, mobile data revenue will more than double by the end of the forecast year — not only that, with $106.9bn in 2017, it will become the single largest contributor to total telecom service revenue, overtaking mobile voice for the first time since the service first became available on the market. Besides mobile data, broadband Internet will continue to play an important role for the operators because we expect the revenue from the service will jump from $41.5bn in 2012 to $35.1bn in 2017. Propelled by the anticipated future demand in data services, we project the total market revenue to reach $270.7bn by 2017, representing a five-year CAGR of 10.3%.
