The telecommunications market in El Salvador generated $1.5bn in 2008. Mobile services and broadband have been the engine for growth with penetration of the population closing at 100% and 2%, respectively, in 2008. Going forward, Pyramid Research expects that the lines of business that will support growth will be mobile data services, fixed broadband and pay-TV, all of which are underpenetrated segments as of 2009.
In the case of mobile services, operators are launching mobile broadband services to leverage their recently built 3G networks as a way to fight expectedly stagnant voice revenue. These services are offered to both prepaid and postpaid users, setting the pace for uptake among the masses. Fixed operators are promoting triple and quadruple plays to encourage adoption and increase loyalty.
