Italy is the fourth largest telecom market in Western Europe, with revenue of US$43.8bn in 2013, or 2.2% of GDP. We expect to see overall market revenue in Italy remain flat over the 2013-2018 period, totaling approximately $44bn in 2018. There will nonetheless be significant growth opportunities in Italy, especially in the mobile market, as operators focus on 3.5G and increasingly on 4G adoption. Data — both fixed broadband and mobile data services — will represent a highly attractive revenue opportunity over the next five years, generating cumulative revenue of $102bn during 2013-2018, of which most will come from mobile data. The recovery from the recession will be slow, and the macroeconomic environment will remain challenging for some time. We expect Italian operators, given their declining revenues and margins, to switch their strategic focus from price competition to enhancing the value of their services through partnerships. Over the forecast period, we also expect further consolidation in the Italian market.
