The Senegalese telecom market generated $1.4bn in service revenue in 2010, which we estimate will grow to $1.6bn in 2011. Growth has been slow in past years due to the limited competition in both the fixed and mobile markets. But we see competition intensifying, especially with the possible entry of a fourth mobile operator, and thus we expect revenue to grow at a slow but steady CAGR of 3% over the next five years, for a total of $1.8bn in 2016.
Broadband Internet and mobile data (including mobile broadband) are expected to lead Senegalese telecom market growth with 23% and 10% CAGRs, respectively, from 2011 to 2016.
Both mobile and fixed voice services will continue to generate the bulk of revenue in the forecast period. However, the introduction of the Glo 1 undersea cable from Nigerian operator Globalcom and the planned Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable by Sudatel/Expresso may accelerate the projected growth for broadband Internet revenue.
Fixed voice revenues will steadily decrease in US dollars over the period (-2% CAGR) as a direct impact of currency fluctuation (0% CAGR in local currency) and increased switches to mobile voice services as competition in the market grows.
